Can You DIY or Should You Call A Contractor?

DIY is bigger than ever these days with the internet and so many tv shows, enough to have an entire network dedicated to DIY)! It’s easier than ever to find the information you need to start and complete almost any project all on your own! But when exactly should you hire a contractor instead of trying to do-it-yourself?

For small jobs like replacing a light fixture, changing a sink faucet or even redoing the hardware on your doors and cabinet, you can do most of those on your own or with the help of the internet. More complex jobs that require any type of plumbing or electrical work may be something you want to leave to the professionals.

Sometimes working with a contractor can save you money. I know, contractors can be a larger expense, however, you are paying for their knowledge, expertise and the skills they have gained over the many years in their career. So, imagine, your installing a new floor in your kitchen and you cut it incorrectly…. now you have to redo that portion and buy more flooring. The contractor would have the knowledge to do it right the first time so you don’t have to buy extra flooring.

Often times a contractor will allow you to do small projects to help complete the larger project and save you a bit of money. If you want to demo your bathroom before they come in to remodel it, they may allow that and it could save you some money in labor!

Another thing to think about is time, do you have the time to complete the project you are about to attempt? Sometimes a room remodel can take months if you’re only focused on it on the weekends when your not at your 9 to 5. Contractors can get the work done while your at work and have it done in just a few weeks instead.

Remember, just because that one guy on that DIY show can do it all in an hour long episode doesn’t mean it didn’t actually take weeks and a whole lot of money! Do your research when looking for a contractor and ask your friends, because I bet some of them have had a great or an awful experience with a contractor and they can help steer you in the correct direction.
